    Great post summarizing a lot of key points about Google+ Pages. I think your statement “When a social network gets its users to a ‘point of no return’, it has
    won. Google+ is still trying to get there, but integrating the above
    will definitely help make Google+ more useful for you” is really accurate. I feel certain that Google is making a play for search domination, but I also think Google+ Pages is about keeping ad spending on Google. There’s no doubt that Facebook has taken a piece of Google’s PPC business, and now the question is – how soon until we see ads on Google+ or, ads directing Google users to Google+ Pages?

      @askdebra:disqus Thanks for your comment
      Of course you are right and there is no question in my mind that Google Plus and Facebook are fighting it out to see who can take how much business from whom.
      I believe making sure Google stays dominant in search and ad spending is highly correlated. The more Google Plus is used the more likely ad spending will stay up.
      Looking forward to your next comment

        @askdebra:disqus after I wrote the above comment I started digging a bit and reflecting.

        Since you started sharing the post late last night (23:30 hours) the traffic has again picked up. The re-shares on Google+ and so forth has been impressive.  Of course its due to your influence and creditibility but, as importantly, it has brought targeted traffic to this blog.

        Hmmm…provocative – will Google+ change SEO to push down Facebook Pages? from +ComMetrics

        So not only does Google Plus affect SEO, it also has the power to bring traffic you want to a site that is being linked and pushed on Google Plus.

        For instance, just about just about 7 hours after Debra shared this blog post on Google+ (me sleeping in the meantime), this morning (07:00 = GMT +1) the blog entry had  just about 1100 unique visitors more than it had late last night.
        Google+ can add traffic. Question, how targeted is the traffic gained.  First impression, quite relevant it seems.

  • http://stopdoingnothing.com Patrick Allmond

    It’s a dramatic good headline, but SEO is far from dead. Everything your mentioned are just more factors that G has to take into consideration. As far as a Facebook page being ranked lower – I doubt that has anything to do with G+. It’s barely been out a week. I’d be very surprised if Google all of a sudden scanned all new G+ pages and made them rank higher than all FB pages.

    Relevance and Frequency will always be the biggest factors. That never changes. Don’t change your SEO strategy with every new shiny object that comes out.

    • http://commetrics.com/articles/2011-trends-get-better-roi-with-facebook-twitter-and-youtube/ Urs E. Gattiker

      @patrick24601:disqus Thanks for stopping by
      You got a point with Google+ being recent as far as brand or corporate pages are concerned.  However, the personal Google Plus pages have been up for a while.  And with the latter ones we have discovered that it is affecting search results and how high up we are being posted.

      You are also right in pointing out that one should not change one’s search strategy with every new shiny thing appearing on the horizon.  Far from it.  I still believe that Google is making a play for staying dominant in search and getting more of our ad dollars.  No doubt, with integrating these various tools, Google will manage to stay on top just a bit longer.

      Thanks for sharing.

    I’ve already seen evidence that Google will rank Google+ pages higher in their SERPs. My brand new Google+ brand page has a PR4. There’s no way that it “deserves” a PR4 since it is only a month old and has very little content, but there you go.

    • http://info.cytrap.eu/articles/social-media-marketing-fur-den-kmu Urs E. Gattiker

      @7869170b0dd75412b61a2a6c123d7eef:disqus Thanks for your feedback.

      I never thought about the Google PageRank and my Google Plus page, I must admit.  Especially since Google is always trying to convince us that PageRank is no longer important.

      But having a PR4 after a short while without much content on your Google + page is an indicator that something might be going on.  Took me over 2 years to get a PR 5 for this blog and I had been wondering how much longer it would take.  Now if my Google + page also just gets a PR4 —- I say go figure, or Google is doing something it ain’t telling us.

      Barbra, thanks so much for sharing.

      PS. By the way, what tool did you use to find your Google + page’s PR number, can you share in a reply pls.
